Cal Young Expansion Project

The Rotary Club of Abilene, in partnership with the Abilene Disc Golf Association is currently working on a community project that will expand Cal Young Park to the west of Lytle Creek.   Disc golf is a very healthy lifetime sport that all ages can enjoy, and this park expansion will provide more opportunities for healthy and enjoyable outdoor recreation that the citizens of Abilene and the surrounding areas can enjoy.

The project consists of 3 phases.  The first phase is the construction of a professionally designed 18-hole disc golf course complete with baskets, tee pads, and tee signs.  The second phase will add other amenities including hiking and walking trials, trash cans, bike trails, playgrounds, and benches.  The last phase will add a pavilion, restrooms, and parking. Initially a 3 year project, each phase will be started as enough money is raised.  Currently, the budget for phase one is $25,000.

In 2008, the Cal Young Expansion Series was the first fundraiser for the expansion and in 2009 the Mayors Cup, Abilene first team event,  was begun.   In association with the Mayors Council on Physical Fitness, the Mayors Cup raises awareness about disc golf and its many healthy benefits as well as raising money for the expansion project.

There is still space for sponsorship on the tee signs and overview sign at Cal Young Park.  If you are interested in sponsoring the project with a larger donation and gaining yourself or business some permanent advertising in a place that traffic grows monthly, support Disc Golf !! It’s rapidly getting more popular and should be considered a worthy investment in advertising.  For questions, call Erik Johnson at 325-439-0186.
